Here it is! The highly anticipated video for the first single from “Trouble’s Door”. Featuring cameo appearances from Pete Murray, Xavier Rudd, Kram from Spiderbait, Scotty Owen from the Living End, Bob McTavish and Fingers Malone. It also features some brilliant surfing from Derek Hynde, Beau Young and Dave Rastovich and an absolutely cracking cutback from Ash himself. It was filmed over a couple of days around the Byron region and was a whole lotta fun to make. Enjoy.

The release of his brand new album Trouble’s Door is the solidification of two years of change for Ash Grunwald personally and a reflection as well of the shifts in the world around us. Since 2010’s award-winning album, Hot Mama Vibes, Ash Grunwald life has been sizzling. After years of surfing the arctic waters of Victoria, Ash bundled up his two main ladies – his beautiful wife and cheeky daughter – and headed north to the warmer shores of NSW. His track ‘Walking’ played a starring role in the Hollywood movie Limitless, new friendships were formed with Kram from Spiderbait and Vika and Linda Bull and a new home with a new home studio were built, from which was birthed his brand new album Trouble’s Door.
In the new songs, Ash – along with his good pal and dubstep sideproject partner, Fingers Malone- has created his most internal album to date, one that found life through the fiery breath of injustice; the frustration of severe political and environmental mismanagement ‘It’s some of my most personal songwriting,’ Ash says of Trouble’s Door. ‘I had just done a benefit gig to stop coal seam gas mining. There were other issues going on at the time, you can take your pick really, and it occurred to me that our system just doesn’t work. We are experiencing the result of rampant unchecked capitalism.’
Ash doesn’t pretend to present answers, Trouble’s Door merely mirrors the modern twists and turns on the same old lesson never learned: a Governments willingness to trade the future for a dollar. But as is the case with the music he loves so dearly, it’s technology that has breathed new optimism into the age-old tale. ‘One positive thread is the democratization of digital communications. I had the experience of being on a surf trip in west Timor on a sail boat that was made the traditional way, with wooden nails and having to haul the anchor up as a group! While I was there I received an email from a friend about the lock the gate campaign. It explained the exponential potential of each person passing it on and it made me realize that we really do have the power to reach each other en masse, regardless of geography or traditional media coverage. The implications of this are cause for optimism, as long as our apathy doesn’t stand in the way.’
Ash Grunwald has acted. Bringing together a record that serves up a cross-section of what it means to be living on a planet in constant balance between hope and despair, all the while striving to fulfil the greatest mission of all – the presence of great times and the possession of a happy heart.
Trouble’s Door touches on the strength that now lies in community to keep each other informed no matter who we are or where we live. And just like the light and dark of the words, the music itself traverses many tales; the blues propelled by driving dancefloor rhythms, buoyed by hip hop beats and slammed by the dubstep crunch. Naturally.
Trouble’s Door is a novel, full of many colours and much food for thought, what pieces you take from it will be reflective of you. All that’s being asked is that when this time you shake your booty, you shake your booty for change.
The release of Trouble’s Door is being funded by pre-sales and special events through PledgeMusic

You’ve probably seen a lot of updates from me recently about my new album, Trouble’s Door, that is coming out really soon, on 10 May. We’re pretty stoked with it, and I reckon its got a pretty fresh sound to it.
We’re just finishing all the things that releasing an album involves – like mixing, mastering, printing, promoting, music videos, and being a proudly independent artist, that means that the cost of all of these things fall directly with me. With the advent of music downloading, its become pretty tough, yet as artists we still don’t want to cut any corners. This is where you guys and PledgeMusic come in. With Pledge Music’s help, we’re giving you guys an opportunity to get your hands on some exclusive stuff and also contribute to the development of this album.
You guys can pledge here in exchange for a range of things, starting at 10 bucks for a heap of remixes and exclusive downloads, and going through to $3000… well, you would have to be one hardcore fan to be dropping 3K on me. But if you’re interested, I have my Steel Guitar that I recorded ‘Introducing’, ‘I Don’t Believe’ and ‘Live at the Corner’ up there! There’s a lot of other stuff as well, like a phone call, a Skype guitar or voice lesson, or a surf with me.
The thing that gets me really excited is that this could be the new way that artists fund music. It’s just between the artist and the fans. If this goes well, I’d love to do more projects, involving you guys in every step of the process. Its kind of like you guys are all executive producers. I think it brings us all closer. Head over here to check it out.
Following on from his award winning, critically acclaimed, 2010 album Hot Mama Vibes we can reveal today that the first single to be taken from the brand new record, Trouble’s Door, due out May 11, will be ‘Longtime’.
Longtime came to life in Ash’s home studio, with the help of his dubstep wingman and producer Fingers Malone, recorded into just the one mic, on nothing but an acoustic guitar. Sounds simple, yes? But don’t be fooled. Ash Grunwald is not a gent to do things by halves; without exploration or without courage. ‘Longtime’ consists of some 90 (!) tracks, the result of a creative flurry that came right at the end of the album’s finish. It’s that age old story – told by Smashing Pumpkins about their track ‘Ruby’ and Nine Inch Nails with ‘We’re In This Together’ – at the final hour, when one more song needs to vaporize, the creative juices that have been coursing for weeks or months, spill over, the last song done within moments. ‘We just ran a four on the floor beat and I started playing and there you have it. I love it when it works like that,’ Ash recalls excitedly. ‘Like a lot of my party songs, it deals with the idea of escaping and just doing your thing…I’ve had that impulse my whole life. Just taking off and doin’ your thing. I imagine driving on a hot summer night with all the windows down or better still the roof angle-grindered right off!! Just singing to the stars.’
But the forthcoming album Trouble’s Door is not all parties and wind in the hair. It’s a record that serves up a cross-section of what it means to be living on a planet in constant balance between hope and despair, all the while striving to fulfil the greatest mission of all – the presence of great times and the possession of a happy heart. But you’ll have to wait for the full story. Look out for ‘Longtime’ on itunes in mid-April and if you’re a facebook buddy, keep your eyes peeled for the opportunity to download ‘Longtime’ for a limited period for freebies!
‘Longtime’ available on itunes mid-April
